Committee of mutual help, since 1968

57 years of standing
with Howrah's most overlooked
families.

From a single rented room in the Pilkhana slum to clinics, schools and a cyclone shelter across Howrah and the Sundarbans — Seva Sangh Samiti has never stopped showing up. Even through the hardest years.

Our work

Four programmes. One mission.

Health and nutrition, primary education, women's empowerment and family welfare — run from five centres across Howrah and the Sundarbans, mostly by people who grew up in the communities they now serve.

An honest account

We won't pretend
the last few years were easy.

A frozen bank account. The loss of two people who held this organisation together for decades. A pandemic. Our reports don't hide any of it — and neither will this site.

2018–19A steady, pre-crisis baseline: 26,128 patients treated at Pilkhana, 248 children at our Jharkhali school, and Anand Bhavan still home to 30 girls in Salkia.
2019–20Our strongest year on record — 25,297 patients at the Medical Centre alone, right before the pandemic reached India in the final weeks of the reporting year.
2020–21Pandemic lockdowns close the medical centre for months. Staff return as soon as it's safe, treating 14,275 patients in a single year regardless.
2022–23We lose our general secretary Mr. Lazarus John and our administrator of 55 years, Mr. Reginald John. 24,558 patients still treated at Pilkhana alone.
2023–24Our FCRA bank account is frozen for seven months during governance changes. The crèche, baby care and medical services all close. Our rural schools never do.
2024–25Slowly rebuilding — back to roughly 25–30% of historic capacity, and looking for the donors who can help us go further.
With thanks

We're rebuilding after a difficult few years — and we're looking for new partners who believe in what's possible when a community looks after its own.
